Chapter Five

Of all the stupid things to forget, condoms and lube topped the list. Hunter could have kicked himself for being so distracted on the drive out to the motel. Now he had to leave Mitch alone in the room to go buy what they should have had in the first place.

He didn’t think Mitch would leave. The only way he could do that would be to call a cab, and somehow Hunter didn’t see Mitch as the type who took cabs alone. Mitch didn’t trust anyone very much, and he certainly wouldn’t be likely to trust a cab driver.

Hunter’s concern was more for what Mitch might do while he was alone. Even with the demons he carried, Mitch probably wouldn’t hurt himself. Hunter didn’t have that sense about him at all. And Mitch wasn’t on drugs anymore. As far as Hunter knew, he didn’t have any to take. So he shouldn’t have been worried.

Except he was.

As he drove up Route 1 to the turnaround he needed to take to get to the drugstore, he realized he was concerned about exactly that. Mitch might take a pill. Just because he’d been off them awhile didn’t mean he didn’t have any now. He’d been outside the club for a while, and he’d gone to the door to pay for the pizza delivery. Hunter was all too familiar with the lengths an addict might go to in order to gain the object of their addiction. What if Mitch hadn’t only been getting fresh air?

“Stop thinking that way.” He managed to make the turn and headed back south toward the drugstores. At least one of them was probably open twenty-four hours. He hoped so anyway. Despite his doubts, he still wanted Mitch. Even more so after the smoking-hot kiss Mitch had planted on him. Hunter didn’t like his partners being too aggressive, but he hadn’t minded the kiss a bit. It had proven Mitch wanted him too.

He couldn’t quite shake his concern. Mitch had seemed nervous and on edge, and he’d admitted he was going through withdrawal. He’d had an opportunity to buy pills if he’d been inclined to do so. Hopefully he hadn’t been inclined. Mitch had sounded proud of himself when he’d said he was clean. Maybe pride would be enough to keep him that way.

The first drugstore Hunter found was fortunately open. He went inside and bought the necessary items, ignoring the half-flirtatious, half-disgusted look the older female cashier gave him. It wasn’t her business to judge people’s purchases, just to ring them up.

On the way back to the motel, he was both aroused and hesitant. He’d been so hard he’d ached when Mitch had kissed him, and he hoped when he walked into the room, they would pick up exactly where they’d left off. But he couldn’t completely believe it would be so easy. For all Hunter knew, this would be the first time Mitch had tried having sex without drugs. He might not be able to handle it.

That was why Hunter had offered him an out so many times.
